commissioned by the Corporation for Olympic Development in Atlanta
Inspired by 12th century Ife (Nigerian) sculpture, this artwork invites viewers to enter a monumental portrait mask of John Wesley Dobbs and look "through his eyes" toward downtown Atlanta.
Dobbs (1882-1961), an African-American civic leader, used his position as Grandmaster of the Georgia Prince Hall Masons to promote massive voter registration in the state.
In an acknowledgment of Dobbs's renowned oratory, the sculpture's interior contains relief quotations from which visitors may create keepsake rubbings.
